Engraving a signet ring is the heart of our craft. The ring itself is the carrier; the engraving tells the story. Whether it is a centuries-old family coat of arms, a graceful monogram or a signet ring with initials: at De Bosson Heraldic Jeweller every engraving is first drawn and then executed by a master engraver. Hand engraving or laser engraving
With a hand engraving, the engraver cuts the motif layer by layer into the stone or the metal, in mirror image. That gives depth and relief: the crest catches the light, the details stay sharp and the seal can genuinely be impressed into wax. A laser engraving burns the motif superficially into the material. That is quicker and less expensive, but the result is flatter and lacks the liveliness of handwork. For a family crest or monogram that must last for generations, we therefore almost always recommend a hand engraving. You will find examples of both on our page about engravings.
Family crest, monogram or signet ring with initials
The classic motif is the family coat of arms: shield, helmet, mantling and, if desired, a motto. If your family does not yet have a coat of arms, our heraldic artist will design one according to the rules of heraldry; read more on designing a family coat of arms. If you would like something more personal or simpler, an intertwined monogram or an engraving with initials is a timeless choice. Engraving in gemstone or in metal
An engraving can be cut directly into the solid precious metal of the face, or into a set gemstone such as layered agate, heliotrope or onyx. Stone engraving is the most refined work: the layered structure of agate, for example, gives the crest a beautiful colour contrast. An engraving in metal looks warmer and more classic. Both versions are equally durable and are executed in our atelier with the same precision.

We use fixed, transparent engraving prices, separate from the price of the ring: a shield €325, a shield in lozenge form €325, a shield with crown €325, a traditional family coat of arms €525, a coat of arms with supporters €675, an alliance coat of arms (two arms combined) €725 and a complex coat of arms with a great deal of detail €850. Which is better: hand engraving or laser engraving?

Can I have a signet ring engraved with initials?
Yes. Initials or an intertwined monogram are a timeless alternative to a family crest. The letters are first designed at actual size and then cut by hand into the stone or the metal.
Can an existing signet ring be re-engraved?
