From introduction to delivery: this is how your bespoke signet ring comes to life, handmade in our atelier in Zeist.
Having a signet ring made is something quite different from buying a ring out of a display case. Your ring is created for you from start to finish: the model in your size, the precious metal of your choice and an engraving that is yours alone. At De Bosson Heraldic Jeweller in Zeist this is done entirely by hand, in four clear steps.
Step 1: introduction and fitting
Every bespoke signet ring begins with a personal conversation, by appointment in our atelier. You try on different models, see the metal colours side by side and we measure your ring size precisely. We discuss your wishes: solid or with a gemstone, oval or octagon, and which engraving you have in mind. That way you get a complete picture before anything is made, including a clear quotation.
Step 2: design and family crest
If your family has a coat of arms, we develop it into an engraving design that does justice to the original. If there is no coat of arms yet, our heraldic artist designs one according to the centuries-old rules of heraldry, in consultation with you and fitting your family history. Read more about that process on the page designing a family coat of arms. A monogram or initials are also first drawn at actual size, so you see exactly what will go into the ring beforehand.
Step 3: handwork in the atelier
Then the ring goes into production. The face and shank are crafted in 14 or 18 carat yellow gold, white gold or rose gold and finished by hand. The engraving is cut by a master engraver, in mirror image and layer by layer, into the gemstone or directly into the metal. This handwork takes time and craftsmanship, and that is precisely what sets it apart from a factory ring: every line is placed deliberately and the ring will last for generations.
Step 4: delivery and aftercare
Once the ring is finished, we invite you to Zeist for the handover. We check the fit and go through the care of the ring with you. You remain welcome afterwards too, for polishing or a size adjustment, for example. Frequently asked questions about having a signet ring made
How long does it take to have a signet ring made?
Allow several weeks to a few months, depending on the model and the engraving. A ring with a newly designed family coat of arms takes longer than a ring with initials. During the introductory meeting we give you a realistic schedule.
Can I have a bespoke signet ring made without a family crest?
Certainly. A bespoke signet ring can also be engraved with a monogram or initials. And if your family does not yet have a coat of arms, our heraldic artist will design one according to the rules of heraldry, so it can be passed down from generation to generation.
What does it cost to have a signet ring made?
Handmade gold signet rings start from around €1950 for ladies and around €2450 to €2900 for gentlemen, depending on model, weight and the current gold price. The engraving is charged separately, from €325. You always receive a clear quotation in advance.
